Can CBD Support Our Aging Pets? The Research Says: "Woof!"

If you follow developments in cannabis research, you know that the cannabinoid CBD is often discussed by those interested in wellness, including for general support of aging bodies, personalized exercise recovery routines, and maintaining a balanced mindset. While much of the conversation is around CBD for humans, any pet owner knows that our four-legged friends age just like we do. Is there a CBD for dogs?

Many pet parents have chosen to incorporate products like CBD dog treats into their pets' routines. This widespread use has encouraged researchers to investigate CBD for pets more closely. Because we’re animal lovers ourselves, we’re especially excited to share the latest research around this topic!

CBD for Dogs: What the Science Says

Cannabis for pets may sound surprising, but there is a reason CBD has become so widely discussed among pet owners. For one, CBD does not produce the same intoxicating effects that THC does.

Human research on CBD has explored its effects on a variety of experiences, including relaxation and sleep quality, among others. Some studies are referenced here for informational purposes: tension and sleep.

But CBD for dogs? It turns out that—like all cannabinoids—CBD interacts with a regulatory network called the endocannabinoid system (ECS). This system helps regulate functions like immune system response, memory, and sleep, and is present in all animals, including dogs.

Veterinarians are becoming more aware of the growing interest in cannabis and CBD products for pets, and in 2017 the American Veterinary Medical Association (or AMVA) drafted a resolution supporting further research into the plant’s uses for animals.

What about using CBD for your pet's daily routine? This is an area of research that is still developing, though pet owners report incorporating CBD products into their pets' routines, and scientific study has shown it is generally well-tolerated in dogs.

What’s the Best CBD for Dogs? Stick With Pure and Natural Products

If you’re planning to use CBD in the care of animals, it is typically recommended to use products with 0.3% THC or less. Pets tend to be much more sensitive to the effects of THC, and any use beyond trace amounts should only be done with the guidance of your veterinarian.

As many clinicians point out, it’s important to know where your CBD comes from. At Papa & Barkley, the care of animals is important to us and we make our award-winning CBD products from 100% USA-grown hemp plants. Then we apply heat, pressure, and water to extract the CBD and infuse it with a carrier oil to produce a clean and potent full-spectrum oil. It’s a quality-focused process for all members of the family, pets included!
